When we were first called for this project, it was to design and build a pool that would accommodate our client’s large family including many grandchildren. As we started designing with our client, the project expanded to incorporate a specialty garden feature at the entrance, sport court/basketball court, open lawn area and a fire feature, all punctuated with art that reflects the client’s unique personality.   The garden was designed to meet the client’s desire to combine the colorful playfulness of the English garden with the sculptural shapes and peacefulness of a Japanese garden.

Modern Adaption

We had the pleasure of working with Zero Energy for this project in Belmont which put a contemporary spin on a classic 1960’s split-level home. We share an appreciation for clean, contemporary design which enhances our client’s well-being and creates a calming aesthetic.  We design to break down the barriers between the interior and outdoor living spaces and create an ease of flow.

Calm Reverie

Home and Design Magazine recently featured a very special project of ours on the Chesapeake Bay. This project began over 20 years ago when our Founder, Shin Abe designed a traditional Japanese Garden based on an abstraction of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. We wanted to share that our founder, Shinichiro Abe, was awarded the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation. Shin received this recognition for his longstanding contributions to spreading and cultivating Japanese Gardens in the United States as well as his efforts to promote the planting of the U.S.-Japan friendship Sakura ( cherry) trees. He received the award from the Japanese Consul General Ohmori .

One  of the pleasant things about winter are the fond memories of walking through a  snowy landscape in the Arnold Arboretum or the Tower Hill Botanical Garden and looking at the winterberry hollies bursting with colorful fruits and the paperbark maples with their cinnamon peeling bark.

Tiers of Joy

High up on a bluff overlooking Wellfleet Harbor and the Cape Cod National Seashore we designed the clients program to include – swimming pool, spa, outdoor kitchen and bar area, multiple fire features, outdoor shower, and a relaxing lounge area protected from the elements.  We were responsible for strategically navigating through a complex permitting process including conservation.  We also had the pleasure of working with a dynamite team of subcontractors for the  electrical, lighting and pool installation.  Enjoy the read.

This design is a modern interpretation of a traditional Japanese garden – an expression of the nearby Chesapeake Bay ecosystem, abstractly represented as a dry garden. This garden offers a dramatically different version of the typical “back yard”.  

Restoring a Beloved Boston Landmark

The George Robert White Memorial, nicknamed “The Angel” by local residents, is a cherished Back Bay landmark. By the beginning of the millennium, however, the memorial was in disrepair: its fountain had stopped working and was overshadowed by overgrown shrubs and trees.

The Peace Bell Garden, United Nations, New York, NY

Crown Prince of Japan, Naruhito, recently visited the Peace Bell Garden at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, NY which was designed by ZEN Associates. ZEN Associates’ Principal, Shin Abe, was honored with the opportunity to explain the concept and history of the garden to the Crown Prince of Japan.

It was a special night to celebrate the highest caliber of work and those who have made a lasting impact on the design field in our region. ZEN Associates is excited for the reopening of Tenshin-en, the Japanese Garden at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston on April 27, 2015. We are proud to have had the opportunity to work with the MFA and the original support team to renovate this wonderful garden.  Tenshin-en’s much anticipated reopening is the result of an extensive yearlong effort to preserve and renew the garden, generously underwritten by Nippon Television Network Corporation.
